I Don't Know How to Pray

Cameron DeBrew • June 25, 2026

A simple place to start when prayer feels awkward, distracted, or difficult.

Have you ever felt awkward, distracted, or unsure what to say to God?

Most Christians have. Sometimes we know we should pray, but when we actually try, we do not know where to begin. Our minds wander. Our words feel clumsy. We wonder if we are saying the right things. We may even feel guilty because prayer does not come as naturally to us as we think it should.

But prayer is not about sounding spiritual. It is not a performance. It is not about impressing God with polished words or religious language. Prayer is simply coming honestly before God.

You Don’t Need Fancy Words

You do not need fancy words to pray. You can begin right where you are. A simple prayer like, “Lord, I don’t know what to say. I need Your help,” is a real prayer.

God is not waiting for you to sound impressive. He invites His people to come to Him with honest hearts.

Tell God What’s Really Going On

One of the best places to start is by telling God what is really going on. Bring Him your worries. Bring Him your fears. Bring Him your needs. Bring Him your gratitude. Bring Him even your sin.

You do not have to clean yourself up before coming to the Lord. You come to Him because you need Him.

Prayer is not pretending everything is fine. Prayer is bringing the truth of your heart before the God who already knows you completely. He knows your weakness. He knows your burdens. He knows your confusion. And because He is gracious, you can come to Him honestly.

Pray Scripture

When you do not have the words, pray Scripture. God’s Word can guide your words.

The Psalms are a great place to start because they give language to so many parts of life: joy, sorrow, fear, repentance, praise, waiting, and trust.

Read a passage slowly and turn it into prayer. Let the words of Scripture shape the words of your heart.

Keep It Simple

You can also keep prayer simple.

Praise God for who He is. Confess sin. Thank Him for His grace and kindness. Ask Him for help. Pray for others.

You do not have to make prayer complicated. A few honest minutes with the Lord are better than avoiding prayer because you feel like you do not know how to do it.

Start Small and Keep Coming Back

Start small and keep coming back. You do not have to pray for an hour. You do not have to have everything figured out.

Begin with a few honest minutes. Tell God what is on your heart. Open His Word. Ask Him to help you pray.

God Hears His Children

And remember this: God hears His children.

Because of Jesus, you can come to the Father with confidence, not fear. Jesus has made the way for sinners to be reconciled to God.

That means prayer is not coming before a distant God who is reluctant to listen. Prayer is coming to your Father, who loves you, hears you, and invites you to depend on Him.

So when you do not know how to pray, start here:

  • Start small.
  • Be honest.
  • Keep coming back.
  • God hears His children.
